A thorough mapping also reveals which assessment domains are underrepresented. Which learning objectives are merely explained but not practiced? Which exam items lack a corresponding learning activity? Which content is learned but not tested at all? Where are there redundancies?

Where does the blueprint come from?

The exam blueprint is typically provided by the certification body or the testing organization. It generally describes: which competency areas will be tested, which topics are included, how the areas are weighted, and, in some cases, what cognitive requirements are expected (pure knowledge vs. application).

For example, when “application” is being assessed, it is not enough to simply provide definitions and theory in the course—the course must also include relevant case studies, scenarios, exercises, and application-oriented exam questions.
